Foundation Stage and Nursery have whole class targets and group targets on display in the classroom. Nursery is currently focusing on reading targets where each child has their photo by the group target they are working towards. Foundation Stage are currently focusing on reading and writing group targets. Children can see the progress they are making when they see their photo has moved onto a new target which is explained to them by an adult.
Year 1 - 6 use target maps so the children can see their year group curriculum as a whole, which part they are currently focusing on and it enables pupils to track their learning and to see next steps in their learning journey. Target maps help children to know what they will be covering in lessons and to self assess against the national curriculum objectives in child friendly terms. Year 1 have target maps in reading, writing and math displayed with arrows that show current learning. Children self assess as a class and tick off objectives covered. Some classes have target map monitors whose job is to read the daily objectives and to monitor the learning for the class by ticking off each term objectives taught. Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have an individual paper copy of each map and children RAG rate weekly, self assessing against the objectives taught. There are three boxes - one for each term - and pupils are encouraged to monitor their progress over the year and to think carefully about self assessment and their next steps.
