Curriculum Intent
“PSHRE helps us to have a positive mindset. It supports us to learn about the world around us and the people within it. We understand how to be caring, confident, kind people who make the right choices and reflect on our decisions. We focus on how to keep ourselves fit and healthy with both our body and mind.”

Personal, Social, Health and Relationships Education:
At Breadsall Hill Top Primary School, we believe in the power of PSHRE to develop positive, well-rounded citizens both within their locality and as part of the global community. We have developed a curriculum that responds to their individual and collective needs through the sharing of our school values; Respect, Kindness and Honesty. We aim for all children to have good mental health and wellbeing, develop resilience for lifelong learning and have healthy relationships. It is also important to us that our children know how to keep themselves safe, including beyond the school gates, and make positive choices throughout their lives.
We care about;
We know that a rich and secure knowledge and skills base is essential for our children to be able to function effectively in society. We identify where there are links between PSHRE and the wider curriculum so that children have numerous opportunities to apply their understanding within different contexts, thereby developing these essential life skills and considering their impact e.g. when learning about sustainability in Geography, other cultures and faiths in RE. At Breadsall we have identified that the Jigsaw scheme will aid the implementation and impact of our whole curriculum intent and support the teaching of our values at its core.
Our curriculum ensures that knowledge is:
PSHRE is taught weekly in every year group, both in isolation as lessons, but also through the wider curriculum including assemblies, visitors to school (the police, the Dogs Trust etc) and opportunities for thematic learning such as Safer Internet Day, Anti-Bullying Week etc. Lessons include a focus on oracy and discussion and encourage children to ask and answer questions that provide opportunities to reflect on life both within and beyond Breadsall.
The content of the curriculum for all year groups is built around:
Theme 1: Being Me in My World
Theme 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
Theme 3: Dreams and Goals
Theme 4: Healthy Me
Theme 5: Relationships
Theme 6: Changing Me (including Sex and Relationships Education)
In summary, we aim for all children to be safe, happy and healthy, contributing positively to society. We want them to show respect and kindness towards themselves and others and appreciate the value of honesty, whilst also demonstrating critical thinking and curiosity about the world around them.
